Do you need special furniture for a round house?
November 1914
Built as a lodge to The Grange
Situated on the edge of Grange Park
This building had three small rooms
The last resident was Mrs Jeffery, grandmother of the cricketer George Clayton, and she was the first
Old Coulsdon resident to receive the Old Age Pension of 5 shillings (25p)
During WW2 it was used as an Air Raid Wardens Post
After the war it fell into decay, and was demolished, to the general regret of the village
The site was used for many years as a council run children's nursery, then as a store for council vehicles
In the 1990s the council sold the land to developers, notwithstanding that there was a land deed saying that the land
belonged to the people of Old Coulsdon, and had only been rented to the Council
Unfortunately the residents were unable to find this document to prove their claim, and the sale went ahead
A small estate of houses now occupies the space
The Grange is the large grey building next to St John's Church where Squire Byron lived
(The recreation ground was the front garden of this building, and in very hot weather
the main drive can still be seen as a slightly different colouration of the grass)
before he built a new house further down the Coulsdon Road
This is now Coulsdon Manor Hotel
Route of Main Drive as mentioned above
Photographed August 2010
